[When Eustace and Beatrix received word of their next mission, they were in separate locations, so it was agreed they would meet in town to coordinate their next move. As he had been closest to the island in question, Eustace was able to arrive first and meet with their contact for further information regarding the mission.
Now he waits outside the meeting point—a small bar where they can go inside and discuss things with some privacy (all prearranged by the Society). Whenever Beatrix approaches, she'll see that he's usual distant, aloof self, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over chest and eyes closed. He's deep in thought, thinking over the task ahead so his expression may seem a bit contemplative as well. However he's not completely zoned out, ears alert as he listens to the sounds around him, both for anything amiss as well for her telltale hurried footsteps.]
[It takes a bit longer than originally planned, but Beatrix will eventually show up, looking a little disheveled but otherwise no worse for the wear. The frown pulling at her face clears the moment she spots him, shifting to a grin as she waves enthusiastically despite being the one approaching.]
There you are, Eustace! Sorry for the wait, I... ran into a little bit of trouble. [Perhaps not the best thing to admit to, but that's not even on Bea's mind because it's the earnest answer.] Nothing that I couldn't handle, of course!
[Pulling up beside him, Beatrix rocks on her heels a bit, feeling excited instead of weary from the earlier ordeal. It feels like it's been a while since they got to go on an assignment together, just the two of them, and this time she knows she'll be able to show him just how much she's improved!]
Anyway, how'd the meeting go? Did we get a good mission this time?
[There's a small flick of his ear when hears Beatrix's approach before he finally looks up to her enthusiastic waving. Rather than given one in return, he just waits silently for her to reach him, his expression remaining the same... Until her admission, that is. There's just the slightest downturn of his mouth, cold blue eyes narrowing.]
Trouble?
[.....Somehow, he's not really surprised given who he's talking to. Still, if it's anything mission related he would like to know. If not—then he won't inquire further.
And since he's not answering her question, it's clear he's not going to say anything more until she spits out the rest.]
It was just- [there we go] I saw these thugs being jerks to these ladies and I decided to put a stop to it, alright? Obviously they were no match for me, though, so it's nothing to make a fuss over!
[She waves her hand as if to brush it off... though it's probably a little less convincing considering the fact that it's her hand bearing the gauntlet that's scuffed the worst.]
[Yes those eyes. And those eyes will be staring at those scuffs mark before slowly traveling to eye and study other places that were damaged. ...Really, he can't be surprised at this point, and for the most part he's willing to take her word for it. But his eyes travel back to her hand, and wordlessly he steps forward and just.
Takes it.
His grip isn't rough, but it is firm and testing as he presses his fingers against her hand, most of the pressure where the marks are. As he does, his eyes train on her face as he watches for her reaction. If she doesn't flinch or grimace in pain, then he'll only inquire once more before leaving it. But if she does...]
[It’ll earn a tiny wince, but not much more than that; a bit sore, but otherwise not a serious injury. More than that, Beatrix will fluster, blushing hard, and she promptly yelps at him.]
H-hey, Eustace- you can’t just grab people like that, you big worrywort! I’m fine, l-let go!
[He's sees that wince and pays no mind to her flustered, blushing face as he holds onto her hand a second or two long before releasing it, arms crossing over his chest.]
Treat your injuries once we're inside. We can discuss things further after.
[And true to form, after speaking he turns to head inside and lead her to the prearranged meeting room.]
Argh, he's so frustrating! It's always like this with him...
[Beatrix stomps her foot, but there's no one left to hear her. So after sighing gustily for a bit, she follows after him.
It doesn't take too long for her to catch up, however, so she spares a few seconds to grumble at him before she does some quick first aid on herself. Fine, she guesses it's better to be safe rather than sorry... Even if that's damage she could've used to power up Embrasque later if she needs to, but she still has to admit it's better to do it the safer way.
After she's finished, Beatrix trains a look on him that's pouting begrudging, but also... just a bit thankful.]
Alright, that's all taken care of, so! We can talk about the mission now, right? Did we get a target, a location?
[She looks like she's holding herself back a bit, but the end of her question still comes out giddy, practically childish.]
[He totally heard that, but he makes no indication and instead continues to lead her to the back and into a room that had been prepared for them. He'll wait until she's finished treating herself, before giving it a once over. Only then does he finally answer.]
There's been reports of increased monster activity on an island called Kantor. It's unusual because this is one of the few places where the locals and monsters live harmoniously, even forming bonds and living together. But the reports indicate that once docile monsters are turning on the locals, causing injuries on both sides.
Zeta and Vaseraga are assigned to a sister island in case something similar arises, but we're to investigate the cause of this change and resolve it. Some of the higher ups believe the monsters are being influenced and suspect it could be from the stolen artifact that's still missing. However, it could be anything, even an unknown Primal Beast, so we have to consider all possibilities.
This means—[After that lengthy debriefing, he now stares at Beatrix with a hard look.] This is first a stealth operation. Before we can do anything, we need to investigate what's going on and figure out the cause.
[In another time, a different John would have let the people he cared about pass him by. In that other life, he would've let happiness slip through his fingers.
But this isn't that story.
When Roxy had brought up going to the beach, John had been nervous, butterflies swarming his stomach since he'd never done anything like this before. Even more than that, there had still been that cloying heaviness weighing him down that's been present since the end of the game, and it had almost made him turn her down. But instead... he'd said yes, and it's still catching him off guard how right it feels.
Maybe it isn't as strange, though. It's always been like that with Roxy, hasn't it? Something about her that makes him feel at ease by her side.
Now, shifting around the blankets and a basket of food in his arms, tangible and Sylladex-free, there's a bounce in his steps as he shoots Roxy a grin.]
This really is a nice place, huh? I'm... really glad we came out here together.
[Oh, that's... a little more earnest than he'd be shooting for, oops. It's honest, though, so he doesn't amend it even if his face gets a little red.]
