[Since before he could remember, Komaeda Nagito has always seen things he shouldn't. Things that shouldn't be there. Things that everyone tells him are all in his head. It's the reason he was never sad after his dog died - Komaeda had been able to see her long after she'd been killed. Sometimes, he still sees her.
He never likes to think about what he'd seen after the plane. Sometimes he still sees them, too. He doesn't think about that often.
So when the young girl tries to get his attention, of course he knows. Komaeda can tell she's someone he shouldn't be able to see. He always feels it like a give in his chest, a strange absence like he has something missing he isn't aware of. The emptiness has never been something that's bothered him, though; just another thing that he accpets, the way he's accepted how his luck will always take away anything dear to him.
But he looks at her, and he smiles gently, letting his eyes roam over her. She's so small. A child that lost her life far too soon. She must've had everything stacked against her, too.]
You seem very distressed. [He doesn't worry about anyone noticing. His classmates don't pay attention to him very often. Just like it should be.] Is there anything I can do for you?
[ It's true that she's rather distressed, so when she sees and hears the person who is many heads taller than her speak up to her, she can't help but open her mouth in awe, almost as if contemplating what to say. So she's definitely quiet for what seems to be a very long time. ]
[ However that long time is soon stopped - and was in fact, not as long as anyone might have thought - as she beams up at him, tugging the corners of her lips into a huge smile. It seems that the contemplation ends when she says a single word. ]
Ah... [Komaeda is surprised, but only a moment passes before he's smiling again.] Not very talkative, are you? That's fine, though. [This girl, she didn't... die before she had a chance to learn how to speak, did she? She's smiling, though, so he's taking it as a good sign.
Komaeda glances over at the rest of his class. They're pretty focused on the commotion that Nidai and Owari are causing, so they'll never notice if he leaves for a bit. Not that they ever notice him much in the first place - but it's better that way, anyway.
After a moment's thought, he gets to his feet. Komaeda knew their difference in height would probably be drastic, but it's especially stark now that he's standing.] A young girl like you shouldn't be stuck wandering around in a high school, even if it's one as special as this one. Would you like to come out to the gardens with me?
[He takes a step forward and offers a hand for her, a choice to decline or accept.]
[ Whether it's truly a good sign or not has yet to be revealed. But she's still smiling, so that seems that things are fine for now. She's rather in awe when he finally stands up; he really is tall. That much is more apparent now than it was before. ]
Mii... I can go with you, but you won't be able to hold my hand, sir.
Ah. [He retracts his hand with a sheepish smile.] Of course, my mistake. Some are able to, but it was rude of me to presume.
[He takes a few steps forward, but he'll wait for her if necessary before leaving the room.] If there's another place you would prefer besides the garden, though, I'd be happy to accompany you there.
[ Her voice trails off a little awkwardly as her gaze drops. Nevertheless, she seems to follow him, playing a small game by trying to mirror his footsteps so her own can't be heard. ]
[...Ah. His smile falters just a bit, expression distant for only a moment. He'd expected as much since she looks so young, but...] You must've wandered a long way to get here. Perhaps I can help you return to your home, though.
[He hums thoughtfully. Briefly wonders if Yukizome will come chasing after him if he happens to be gone for too long. But Komaeda smile returns, wide and joyful. It'd be interesting to find out.]
[ She won't say anything about how she's somehow managed to get to this school from her hometown -- she honestly doesn't know, really -- and instead decides to answer the more immediate question. Possibly the more important one, actually. ]
Unfortunately I can't say that I have, no. [His cheerfulness doesn't falter, though, especially with the words that follow.] But that shouldn't be a problem for me. You see, I have very... unusual and powerful luck. With the way it works, something catastrophically bad may have to happen to me first, but in the end the good luck will prevail.
[Komaeda stretches his hands in front of him, palms up.]
So I may have to deal with some bad luck before we can get there... But eventually, we'll find this Hinamizawa you come from. Of that, I have no doubt.
[He laughs then, a little sheepishly.] Ah, I apologize...! You needn't worry at all - the only one harm will come to is me. It's a benefit of this unique gift I have - the ones I can see, the others who are like you...
[Those who have passed on, are the words he doesn't say.]
You won't be harmed by any misfortune my luck brings down upon my head. I promise. I'm the only one that will be in danger.
[He shakes his head as the door leading out into the garden comes into view.] I'm not someone worth being upset over, though it's kind of you to say. It's not something you need to worry over, though. That's how things have always been for me, and I doubt that will ever change. [Komaeda shrugs, smile still cheerful.] Better that it's me than someone else who doesn't deserve it. And when even great good and hope can come from misfortune, I can hardly complain!
I barely know Rika and this is already destroying me

[ There's something akin to disappointment in her voice as she scrunches her features slightly. ]
Do we really have to face bad luck?
